The Official Guidebook for Biohazard: Gun Survivor is an additional source material for the game of the same name.

It was published via Famitsu with over 200 pages featuring a series story recap and an in-depth look at the characters. It also features commentary on the five secret reports that can be unlocked during the game, providing additional insight to the Rockfort Island incident.

This book has been translated by REP staff member, TheBatMan.

THE BEGINNING OF THE BIOHAZARD:

Umbrella Pharmaceuticals was a multinational pharmaceutical corporation with experimental plants and research facilities located throughout the United States and around the world. To the public, it was known as a respected and successful company. Behind that benevolent facade, however, Umbrella was secretly conducting experiments to create B.O.W.s (Bio Organic Weapons) by using special viruses to alter the genes of animals and humans.

The incident began in the remote Arklay Mountains of the United States.

In May 1998, the T-Virus being researched at an Umbrella laboratory on the outskirts of Raccoon City leaked from the facility. Most of the laboratory workers and test animals fell victim to the virus. Thereafter, reports of monsters appearing around the Arklay Mountains became increasingly common, accompanied by numerous disappearances and bizarre murders.

In July of the same year, after mountain roads were closed off, S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics and Rescue Service)—a special operations unit of the Raccoon City Police Department responsible for handling unusual crimes and rescue missions—was dispatched to investigate and suppress the incidents at the mansion housing the laboratory.

By that point, however, Umbrella’s primary research operations had already been relocated beneath Raccoon City, and the mansion had become a nest of undead workers and grotesque experimental creatures.

Through the efforts of S.T.A.R.S. members such as Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, the research facility was destroyed, and the true extent of Umbrella’s involvement in the biological disaster was uncovered.

However, fearing exposure, Umbrella exerted political pressure on senior police officials, preventing the facts of the incident from being fully disclosed. Frustrated by the lack of progress in uncovering the truth behind the Mansion Incident, Chris travelled to Umbrella’s European branch to investigate the corporation’s activities firsthand.

In August 1998, at Umbrella’s underground research facility beneath Raccoon City, the brilliant scientist William Birkin was developing a new virus known as the G-Virus, a strain completely different from the T-Virus.

Eventually, conflicts arose between William—who sought greater status within Umbrella—and the corporation itself. As a result, the virus was released into the underground sewer system, causing a catastrophic outbreak. Soon afterward, the majority of Raccoon City’s citizens were transformed into zombies.

Meanwhile, Claire Redfield arrived in Raccoon City in search of her brother Chris, believing he had disappeared. At the same time, rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy, newly assigned to the Raccoon City Police Department, was making his first trip to the city.

But by the time they arrived, Raccoon City no longer bore any signs of normal life. It had become a city of death, filled with chaos and confusion, where the sounds carried by the wind could be mistaken for the cries of the dead. Barely managing to escape the grasp of the approaching B.O.W.s, Claire and her companions ultimately succeeded in escaping the city.

At roughly the same time, Jill Valentine was also investigating the biological disaster within Raccoon City and attempting to escape the virus-ridden metropolis. However, she became the target of relentless pursuit by a terrifying assassin dispatched by Umbrella to prevent information about the incident from leaking out: the Nemesis-T Type.

Unlike previous B.O.W.s, which acted purely on instinct, the Nemesis-T Type could be directed toward specific objectives through control of its brain functions. Furthermore, its entire body was protected by a bulletproof and blast-resistant coat, making it the ultimate biological weapon.

In order to gather valuable combat data from real-world operations, Umbrella independently deployed the U.B.C.S. (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service), an irregular military unit organized by the company to respond to biological emergencies.

Fighting alongside members of the U.B.C.S., Jill managed to repel the attacking B.O.W.s and survive the relentless pursuit of Nemesis-T. In the end, she successfully escaped from Raccoon City.

However, the United States government, seeking to conceal the truth behind Umbrella’s biological weapons program, launched a missile strike under the pretext of preventing the spread of an unknown infectious disease. As a result, Raccoon City—and all evidence of the dark secrets surrounding the incident—was wiped from the face of the earth.

In December 1998, Claire Redfield was continuing her search for her brother Chris and attempted to infiltrate Umbrella Pharmaceutical’s Paris branch on her own.

Although she managed to evade pursuit by the facility’s security forces through her resourcefulness and determination, she was ultimately captured by Rodrigo Juan Raval, the chief of security. Claire was then imprisoned on Rockfort Island, a remote island located off the coast of South America.

The island housed an Umbrella base that included training facilities for irregular military forces as well as prisons used to confine individuals who knew too much about Umbrella’s secrets.

On the very day Claire was incarcerated, Rockfort Island came under sudden attack by a mysterious organization. As a result of the assault, a virus spread throughout the island.

After becoming infected, many prisoners and workers were transformed into savage B.O.W.s and turned on those around them. Having narrowly escaped these monsters, Rodrigo eventually released Claire from her cell.

Outside the prison, the island had become overrun with hordes of living corpses wandering in search of human flesh.

Claire soon joined forces with Steve Burnside, another prisoner being held on the island. Together, they attempted to escape from Rockfort Island, where death and destruction had spread everywhere.

Meanwhile, Chris Redfield learned of his sister’s plight through a message from Leon S. Kennedy, who had survived the Raccoon City incident alongside Claire. Upon hearing that Claire was in danger, Chris set out for Rockfort Island, fully aware that Umbrella and its B.O.W.s awaited him there.

CHARACTERS:

Claire Redfield

Age: 19 Sex: Female Height: 169 cm (5 ft 6½ in) Weight: 52.4 kg (115.5 lbs)

After the Mansion Incident in Raccoon City, Claire Redfield set out in search of her missing brother, Chris Redfield, and found herself stepping into even greater danger.

Ordinarily, Claire is a cheerful, energetic, and highly curious college student. However, likely due to the influence of her older brother, a member of a special operations unit, she is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat and the use of firearms. These abilities enabled her to survive the biological disaster that engulfed Raccoon City.

Later, while investigating the whereabouts of her brother, Claire infiltrated the Paris branch of the pharmaceutical company Umbrella. There, she was captured and transported to a prison concealed on a remote island in the southern seas.

Steve Burnside

Age: 17 Sex: Male Height: 173 cm (5 ft 8 in) Weight: 67.5 kg (149 lbs)

Like Claire, Steve Burnside was being held prisoner on Rockfort Island. Taking advantage of the confusion caused by an attack from a mysterious organization, he escaped from his cell and later joined forces with Claire after meeting her within the base.

When they first met, Steve was a reckless and somewhat immature boy, younger than Claire. However, as they struggle together through one life-threatening situation after another, he gradually matures and grows into a dependable young man. While he possesses an almost blind faith in firearms, he also has a side that finds it difficult to fully trust other people. In particular, he harbours an unusually strong resentment toward members of his own family.

Rodrigo Juan Raval

Age: 32 Sex: Male Height: 178 cm (5 ft 10 in) Weight: 75 kg (165 lbs)

With tanned skin and a well-built physique, Rodrigo Juan Raval serves as the commander of the security forces at Umbrella’s Paris Research Facility. At the Paris facility, he successfully captures Claire after she manages to evade and outmanoeuvre numerous security personnel. He is then responsible for escorting her to Umbrella’s base on Rockfort Island. Shortly after Claire is imprisoned there, the base suffers catastrophic damage due to an attack by a mysterious organization. As a result, there is no longer any reason to keep her detained, and Rodrigo releases her from confinement.

Chris Redfield

Age: 25 Sex: Male Height: 181 cm (5 ft 11 in) Weight: 80.5 kg (177 lbs)

A former member of S.T.A.R.S. who survived the Mansion Incident in Raccoon City.

Disillusioned with the corrupt police system that had succumbed to political pressure and was unable to act against Umbrella, Chris left the organization and travelled to Europe to investigate the true nature of the corporation. Although he himself had become one of Umbrella’s primary persons of interest, Chris learned that his younger sister Claire had been captured by Umbrella. Without regard for his own safety, he infiltrated Rockfort Island alone in order to rescue her. Chris possesses tremendous physical strength, an unbreakable spirit, and a strong sense of justice.

EXTRA CHARACTERS:

Alfred Ashford

Age: 27 Sex: Male Height: 176 cm (5 ft 9 in) Weight: 61.8 kg (136 lbs)

Alfred Ashford is the seventh head of the prestigious Ashford family, one of the world’s most distinguished noble houses, and serves as the supreme commander of Umbrella’s base on Rockfort Island. Although he appears to be working for Umbrella, his true goal is to restore the Ashford family to the greatness it enjoyed before its decline during his father’s generation. However, his efforts have produced little success. Mentally unstable, Alfred’s words and actions often border on irrationality. Perhaps because of this instability, he is known for committing cruel and sadistic acts against the prisoners held under his authority.

Alexia Ashford

Age: 27 Sex: Female Height: 175 cm (5 ft 9 in) Weight: 54.3 kg (120 lbs)

Alfred’s twin sister, Alexia Ashford, is renowned for both her extraordinary beauty and exceptional intelligence. She is often described as the reincarnation of Veronica Ashford, the legendary founder who established the Ashford family’s distinguished status. As part of her research, Alexia injected herself with a new experimental virus known as T-Veronica. In order for the virus to fully adapt to her body, she entered a prolonged state of suspended animation.

However, to conceal the details of the experiment from Umbrella, it was publicly reported that she had died in an accident during her research.

Albert Wesker

Age: 38 Sex: Male Height: 183 cm (6 ft 0 in) Weight: 84.5 kg (186 lbs)

Albert Wesker once served as the captain of S.T.A.R.S. and was the commanding officer of Chris and the other team members. In reality, however, he was an operative planted by Umbrella to control and monitor the organisation. During the Mansion Incident in Raccoon City, Wesker used S.T.A.R.S. personnel to gather combat data on B.O.W.s under real battlefield conditions.

However, the operation failed due to the resistance of Chris and the other survivors, and Wesker was believed to have died during the incident. Sometime later, he resurfaced as the leader of a mysterious organization known as H.C.F., which launched an attack on Rockfort Island.

AFTER THE CODE VERONICA:

This version of Gun Survivor 2: Biohazard Code: Veronica contains numerous clues and pieces of foreshadowing hidden throughout the backgrounds of the main scenario. By understanding these elements, players can gradually piece together the full picture of the story.

The Secret Reports, which become available after discovering the keywords hidden within each stage, provide invaluable information for understanding this hidden background and the larger narrative.

In the following section, we will examine each of these reports in detail. Whether this is your first experience with the Biohazard (Resident Evil) series or you are a longtime fan who has played through the entire franchise, be sure to read the reports carefully and use them to gain a deeper understanding of the complete story of Code: Veronica.

REPORT 1: WARDEN’S DIARY

A few hours until I stop being human. This will be my final diary entry. Spilled milk can never be put back in the glass. And there is always someone who spills the milk.

Sure enough, this is how it ends. The usual biohazard.

In forty-eight hours, the virus will have completely contaminated everything. Every living thing on this island will perish. Before long, I too will become nothing more than a flesh puppet controlled by the virus.

My only remaining hope is her. My invincible other self. My Neticia.

I first met her in an empty prison cell. There was nothing there to eat, yet she had diligently spun her web inside that barren cage. Why did I grow so fond of you? Was it because your struggle to survive in a forgotten corner of the world reminded me of myself?

I would tirelessly catch moths and cockroaches and toss them into your web. Watching you wrap your prey tightly in silk and slowly drain their fluids… That was when I felt most at peace.

As you grew larger and larger, I wanted to make you even bigger. Even stronger.

So I stole the flesh of experimental subjects that had been marked for disposal and fed it to you.

The virus worked wonders. Before long, you had grown to the size of a human.

When I ran out of food to give you, I started throwing prisoners into your cell. They were destined to die under Alfred’s torture anyway. A few missing prisoners hardly mattered.

Eventually, you grew too large to live inside the cell. So I released you into the prison rafters.

The rafters became Neticia’s nest. There, at random, you devoured prisoners and guards alike.

Nothing could defeat my other self. Even that hateful fool Alfred— your fangs would tear him apart.

But now it is over. The virus is consuming my body.

Neticia…

I can hear you moving restlessly above me, your eight legs skittering across the ceiling. You’ve probably eaten everything that can be eaten. The hunger is driving you mad.

Netty… Kill everything. Destroy everything. Devour everything.

There is no meaning left in a world where I no longer exist.

Eight eyes appear before me, staring down as if peering into my soul.

Do not hesitate. Follow the instinct of your hunger. Crush me between your jaws.

The diary written by the warden of the prison on Rockfort Island explains how the giant spider encountered as the boss of Stage 1 in Arcade Mode came into existence.

According to the diary, the spider named Neticia, which the warden discovered in a prison cell, was most likely a specimen that had originally been used in B.O.W. experiments and somehow found its way into the prison. The spider is identified as a Black Widow (Latrodectus mactans), a species found throughout Central and South America. It is feared for possessing a powerful neurotoxin and is often regarded as one of the three most dangerous venomous spiders in the world. Ultimately, Rockfort Island descended into a biohazard outbreak following the surprise assault by the H.C.F. forces. However, had that attack never taken place, the island might eventually have become nothing more than a feeding ground for Neticia.

REPORT 2: INVESTIGATION REPORT

I will keep this brief. For the past three months, our agents have been conducting a covert investigation, but we have yet to identify the H.C.F. spy. However, judging from Document D, recovered in Geneva, it is almost certain that a traitor exists—someone with unrestricted access to the Rockfort Island residence. I promise you that, once discovered, this individual will be dealt with immediately.

We do not yet know what the enemy is planning, but there is no doubt that an unsettling atmosphere surrounds H.C.F. It appears they have even succeeded in creating a duplicate of the stolen experimental subject.

Naturally, a certain man was involved in that success. A man you know well.

As a precaution, I am sending you a gift. A U.S.-made B.O.W.: Nemesis-T Type. It is the latest model, one that performed admirably in Raccoon City. Since both the budget and management of this project fall under classified expenditures, it cannot be traced back to us. It will be smuggled in aboard a submarine, concealed among incoming equipment shipments.

Therefore, no one besides you and me knows that this creature has been transported to the island.

P.S. The Nemesis-T Type is programmed to activate automatically when it detects an emergency situation. There is no other way to awaken it. Think of it as nothing more than an insurance policy.

Among the documents sent to Alfred Ashford, commander of Rockfort Island, are references to the existence of H.C.F., an organization opposed to Umbrella. The “certain man” mentioned in the document is believed to be Albert Wesker, who once operated as an Umbrella agent. However, Wesker now appears to be aligned with H.C.F. and stands in opposition to Umbrella.

From the contents of the report, it can be inferred that the Nemesis-T Type had been prepared as a countermeasure against possible sabotage or infiltration attempts by H.C.F.

As a result of the attack on Rockfort Island, however, Nemesis was apparently activated and forced into action. Given its relentless pursuit of Claire and Steve, it is likely that Nemesis had been programmed to eliminate individuals who had no legitimate connection to Umbrella.

REPORT 3: FINAL WORDS OF AN UNKNOWN PRISONER

(Scrawled on the wall of the Training Facility)

My beloved son,

This place will soon be destroyed because of the T-Virus. Your father, who works here, knows how terrifying the virus truly is. Once a biohazard occurs and the virus spreads beyond a certain point, there is no way to stop it. After entering the body, it takes control of its host and, in order to spread itself further, exponentially accelerates the rate of infection.

I won’t ask you to forgive me now. You were right. Your mother’s death was caused by me.

That is an undeniable fact. Even now, I regret what I did every single day. How did things end up like this? What did I do wrong?

I know I was a terrible father. But I loved my family. At this point, I have no reason to lie. I cannot undo the mistakes of the past. All I can do is pray that you survive.

You’re a smart boy. I doubt you’ll ever come back here. But if, by some chance, you’re reading this… Leave immediately. Get away from this place as fast as you can. Soon this place will be consumed by evil.

By the time you read this, your father will no longer be here. I love you.

The message carved into the wall of the training facility was the final message left by a man who had once worked for Umbrella, addressed to his son. By chance, this man obtained confidential information concerning B.O.W.s and devised a scheme to use that information to make a fortune. For the sake of such a petty personal ambition, however, tragedy followed. His wife was shot and killed by Umbrella, and his son was imprisoned in the detention facility on Rockfort Island.

Eventually, the man himself was captured and transported to Rockfort Island, where he became infected with the virus. Realising what fate awaited him, he came to understand that his end was near. Knowing that his son was also being held on the island—and believing they would never meet again while alive—he left behind a final message. Within it, he expressed his remorse, apologised for his mistakes, and entrusted his son with one final hope: the hope that he might survive. But the question remains: Did his son ever truly understand what his father was trying to tell him…?

REPORT 4: ENCRYPTED E-MAIL FROM UNKNOWN SENDER

The following message was discovered and decrypted by ECHELON (French: échelon, meaning “tier” or “step”), an international signals intelligence network.

The e-mail had been heavily encrypted. It was uncovered after the National Security Agency (NSA) searched for references to “Alexia.” The message was transmitted during the Rockfort Island Incident and is believed to be closely connected to the disaster.

Subject: Encounter with the T-Veronica

Report:

During operations on Rockfort Island, I encountered a subject infected with T-Veronica. It appears that the Umbrella Corporation (“the Umbrella of Death”) had been concealing T-Veronica on the island. Through covert operations and a Level 3 Biohazard, we have seized control of approximately 90% of the island’s facilities and organisation. Organised resistance has already ceased. The infected subject bears a striking resemblance to Alexia Ashford, daughter of the Ashford family.

Initial contact occurred at 22:40 on the previous day within the underground research facility.

Agent Squad One and two modified Hunter units engaged the target in close-quarters combat.

Both units were annihilated after approximately three minutes of fighting.

Based on my observations, the subject possesses an extraordinary ability to adapt and transform in response to external attacks. For example, when struck by gunfire, the subject immediately underwent a metamorphosis, developing an exoskeletal structure. Its potential exceeds anything imaginable. Furthermore, it is easy to predict that exposure to environmental changes or life-threatening situations will trigger further evolutionary adaptations. The subject’s blood appears to ignite upon contact with the atmosphere. By utilising this property, it can launch blood-dispersal attacks that far surpass the capabilities of a flamethrower. Within moments, it can create a battlefield engulfed in an inferno. The probability of my unit returning safely is close to zero. This is because the infected subject combines intelligent, human-like reasoning with overwhelming offensive capabilities, making it a truly terrifying opponent.

I repeat: The probability of my unit returning safely is effectively zero.

This e-mail, which appears to have been sent during a covert operation on Rockfort Island, was most likely transmitted by Albert Wesker to H.C.F. headquarters. Wesker led an H.C.F. special operations unit in a surprise assault on Rockfort Island with the objective of stealing T-Veronica, a new virus that Umbrella had been secretly developing. However, even the squads of modified Hunters—enhanced versions of B.O.W.s that had themselves been improved through Wesker’s efforts—proved completely powerless against Alexia Ashford after her infection with T-Veronica.

As a result, the operation suffered catastrophic losses.

In the original Code: Veronica, the Alexia encountered in her first form is capable of evolving further according to circumstances, transforming into second and third forms with progressively greater combat abilities and increasingly monstrous appearances. Furthermore, during the course of the operation, Wesker himself came into close contact with Alexia and engaged her in battle for a brief period.

REPORT 5: CLAIRE’S MONOLOGUE

I must have fallen asleep without realising it. The roar of the VTOL’s turbojet engines woke me.

I had been dreaming. A terrible, terrible dream. My whole body was drenched in sweat, and my heart was still pounding violently. As dreams always do, the memories of it began to fade almost immediately. Only fear remained… and a profound sadness. To my surprise, it seemed I had been crying.

In the cockpit, Steve sat at the controls. The nightmare was already far behind us. What reason was there to be afraid? What reason was there to grieve? We had survived the island of death and despair.

Soft light poured into the cockpit, driving away the darkness that had surrounded us. Across the ocean below, dolphins leaped joyfully through the waves. And yet, the remnants of the nightmare refused to leave my mind. Little by little, the scenes from the dream returned. It was… a dream about that island. Just as in reality, I was fighting. Together with Steve. But the dream had begun to follow a different path. A chill ran down my spine. A tragic farewell between Steve and me… It was another future that might have existed. Had anything gone wrong, things could have ended that way. But we had defeated fate. Armed with nothing but a gun in my hand,

we escaped that hell. I forced the nightmare from my thoughts. Then I spoke to Steve. The sky was filled with endless light.

Suddenly, the whiteness of the sky began to grow. Why won’t he turn around? A white haze, like a thick fog.

Was the dream really a dream? I don’t know… The entire world was becoming enveloped in white.

Why won’t he turn around? Is reality really reality?

The rhythmic drone of the VTOL’s engines began to change. It became the sound of something slicing through the air—like a gigantic axe being swung. Gradually… slowly… the sound grew louder, more real, more tangible.

In this game, the story comes to an end with Claire’s escape from Rockfort Island. In the original Resident Evil Code: Veronica, however, the story continues beyond that point, shifting to a secret Ashford family facility located in Antarctica. There, Claire is destined to experience a tragic farewell with Steve Burnside…

And yet, perhaps those events are only one possibility among many. Depending on the circumstances, a different ending may be equally possible. Having awakened from a nightmare so vivid that it felt real, Claire must now continue forward into the reality that awaits her.

Whether the nightmare she experienced was truly just a dream, or whether the peaceful reality in which she now finds herself is the real illusion, is something Claire has no way of knowing.

But one thing can be said with certainty: By choosing a different path, it is possible to overcome fate itself.
