S.T.A.R.S.
A special unit established in 1996 to tackle crimes that have become more robust and diverse over the years. Its official name is the Special Tactics and Rescue Service, but it more commonly known as S.T.A.R.S. It is affiliated with the Raccoon City Police Department, but its establishment was sponsored by several private companies, including the local giant, Umbrella Corporation. It is therefore distinct from ordinary policing units thanks to its superior equipment and dedicated intelligence network. Currently there are two teams: Alpha and Bravo. Each team is comprised of specialists in their respective fields, and each holds six members, 12 in total, dedicated to dealing with criminality.

MONSTER (PAGES 98-103)
MONSTER:
The ‘virus,’ this abominable microscopic entity, caused this nightmare. The monsters that roam this facility are not only ‘enemies,’ but are also the root of this incident. Here are some of the monsters that the documentation was able to confirm. We hope that you will succeed in escaping from the facility without succumbing to them.
ZOMBIE:
The result of experimental administration of virus variants at the facility. The accidental spread of the virus has also turned infected humans into monsters – zombies. They have some vestiges of their former lives in their clothing, but their skin is decaying and there is no light in their eyes. Although there are individual differences, following a short incubation period after infection, the zombie gradually loses the ability to reason and think, leaving only the instinct to ‘feed’. This instinct often causes them to open their mouths wide and suddenly bite, and they sometimes vomit gastric juices. They will attack a living person and feed on their flesh and blood, resulting in the unfortunate individual joining the path to zombification. In this way, the contamination of the t-virus spreads in a chain reaction. However, since they were originally human, it is pitiful to see them crawling along in search of fresh meat having lost the use of their legs.
CRIMSON HEAD:
After a certain number of attacks, the zombie ceases activity and enters a dormant phase, during which time the body tissues are rebuilt by a variant of the virus. When the zombie awakens from this dormancy, it has huge, sharp claws and moves much more quickly than before. They are also much more ferocious and should be regarded as a different creature altogether. Unless the zombie is eliminated, it will always change into this state. The ‘Crimson Head’ as researchers named it, literally translates to ‘a crimson head’, but in reality, the body of a dormant zombie gradually turns red. After they become active, they are bathed in the blood of their prey and turn an even redder colour.
CERBERUS:
Cerberus is a type of biological weapon (B.O.W.) that was systematically created at the facility. One of the purposes of B.O.W. production is for military use. This B.O.W., named after the Greek myth of the ‘hound of Hades’, was produced by injecting the t-virus into a military dog type. As the original dog was a Doberman, it is extremely ferocious. The characteristics of the base-dog have been further improved, and it excels at long-distance, high-speed movement and co-ordinated attacks in packs. When they surround their prey in groups, they use their leaping ability to pounce on them one after another and finish them off with bites to the throat. Incidentally, some of the dogs in the facility seem to have been zombified via secondary infection.
CROW:
The t-virus spill also affected organisms in the vicinity of the facility. The contamination is spread by various factors, such as injuries from B.O.W. attacks and consumption of virus-infected organisms. This crow is also a crow turned into a monster by so-called secondary infection. Normally, crows remain stationary in high places, but they attack in groups when approached or behave in a suspicious manner. Their attack methods are similar to their pre-infection habits, relentlessly targeting the head with their beaks and sharp claws. Although the Crow was accidentally infected with the t-virus, other organisms with secondary infections have been identified. The spread of such cases seems to have been calculated in terms of weapon-usage.
MONSTER PLANTS:
Monstrous plants caused by secondary infection with the t-virus. Their appearance is completely changed from before the infection, and their original species is unknown. It has long, thick, ivy-like tendrils, and despite its thick, hardened outer skin, they move gracefully. They use their tendrils like a whip to strike hard, sometimes entangling and constricting their prey. Its power is so strong that it is hard to believe it is a plant. Even after becoming a monster, it seems to rely on water to sustain life, and is firmly rooted in the vicinity of water sources. Although it has no means of mobility, it can spread the virus over a wide area via its pollen, which is why its effects are predicted to be more effective than any other monster.
ADDER:
Venomous snakes that have become more aggressive as a result of secondary t-virus infection. Normally, snakes are unlikely to actively bite other large animals, but in the case of this monstrous adder, it will attack simply by approaching its habitat. They cluster on walls or in trees, and when people pass under them, they fall and pounce on their prey in groups. Adder are frightening not only because of their haemorrhagic venom, but also because their bites facilitate the entry of the t-virus into the body. In this respect, they are even more frightening than a B.O.W.
WASPS:
Wasps are the general name for wasps from the waspidea family and vespids, but their shape suggests that they are members of the wasp family that have grown abnormally large due to the action of the t-virus. Most wasps are carnivorous, and presumably, they were infected when they fed on insects that had eaten pollen from plants infected with the virus. If this is the case, it is safe to assume that the virus has spread further than expected. Moreover, considering their fertility, contamination should spread even further. They have large, sharp, poisonous stingers and attack their prey in groups. They seem to be especially ferocious in the vicinity of their nests, making it impossible to approach them without special protective clothing.
WEB-SPINNER:
The B.O.W. was created through experimental administration of the t-virus and genetic manipulation. The B.O.W. was probably based on a species of tarantula, which is widespread from Central America to South America, judging from its appearance and ecology. This B.O.W., named ‘Web-Spinner’, roams the facility in multiple dimensions, sticking to walls and ceilings. They spray their prey with venom as they approach, and then entangle them with their mucous threads once they become immobilised. However, the behaviour of some tarantulas, in which they shower their enemies with their own body hair, has not been observed. Its reproductive method is also changing; they raise small spiders in the womb, and when the parent’s abdomen is breached, countless small spiders crawl out.
CHIMERA:
This B.O.W. is a human-based organism that was created by combining changes in the genetic structure caused by the t-virus and genetic information from other organisms. Its appearance is so horrifying that one wants to curse the researchers who created it. It is aptly named after a chimera (a monster with a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a snake’s tail) from Greek mythology. The many legs suggest that it may have been influenced by insect or polypod genetic information, but in any case, its agile movements and sickle-like claws are astonishing. Preferring dimly lit areas, they move through air vents and often attack their prey in groups. When they spot prey, they attack with their huge claws.
HUNTER:
Like the Chimera, the B.O.W. is based on a human being and has been modified by changing its genetic structure through a virus and by mixing it with genetic information from other organisms. Its appearance suggests that it is a combination of reptilian or amphibian genetic information. It has a thick skin like armour, huge claws, and sharp fangs. Its movements are agile, and it has excellent jumping ability. When it spots prey, it jumps high, and upon landing, it swings its claws and slices the prey’s neck. They are also good at working alone as well as in coordination with their companions. The name ‘hunter’ is probably derived from this. With its superior offensive and defensive functions, the hunter is expected to have been regarded as a very powerful weapon among the B.O.W. produced in the facility. They sometimes even act as if they have intelligence, so caution is advised when confronting them.
