Fumer

The Fumer was an attempt by The Connections to improve the standard base variant Molded creature using the artificial White Mold rather than the regular E-Type Mutamycete produced by Eveline. They were given the development code WM-02 and retained the same basic appearance as a Molded creature albeit it was covered in white mold rather than black.

As the White Mold is noticeably thinner and silkier like thread rather than the oily, thicker tendrils of E-Type Mutamycete, much more of the original human host remains visible underneath the fungal filaments, including muscular tissue, organs and even small fragments of bone.

One distinct feature of a Fumer is that the decaying human skull is now very prominent, and as a result it gives off a ghastly appearance with its teeth permanently on show in a unsettling leering sneer. Its body composition is still humanoid and like a regular Molded it possesses elongated arms and fingers. Fumers also have bloated stomachs and some of the thinner strands of White Mold have congealed and clumped to resemble small wisps of white hair. Fumers attack like regular Molded and will swipe and slash with their extended claws. They are quite slow moving but as they stumble along, they are constantly emitting the White Mold spore in a bid to spread the infection further. Any areas where Fumers are released are likely to become contaminated extremely quickly.

Unfortunately, their intelligence is very low, and they cannot open doors or demonstrate any forward thinking. They are driven purely by instinct.

As they are not linked to Eveline’s hive mind, they act as singular organisms and will not work in groups or communicate with one another. The only sounds a Fumer makes is a strange gurgling and screeching which is somewhat reminiscent of an infant screaming. Fumers are completely resistant to conventional weaponry and display impressive regenerative capabilities. They can only be killed by rapid-acting mycetotoxic ammunition and just one shot is required to take them down. Evaluation by Connections’ researchers suggest the Fumer would be useful to deploy in the battlefield as unless enemy forces possessed special Anti-Regen weaponry, then these creatures could quickly spread the White Mold spores across vast areas without being killed or incapacitated.

In 2017, Lucas Baker released a number of WH-02 specimens into the lower levels of the mines and they quickly turned a network of labyrinthine tunnels into a nest of White Mold.
