Nancy

Any hope of establishing a new life however is dented during a heist on a nearby farm. Food for the pair had become a major issue and a farm was seen as a soft target. However, during the raid the alarm was raised and the farmer took up arms to protect his land. Mike, only 8 years old could not run as fast as his sister and during the chase was shot dead by the farmer. Nancy was horrified as she fled the scene, remaining in ear shot of Mike as he called out for his sister in his last breath.

Nancy would remain on the streets for the next 4 years. She delved into petty crime in order to survive and in doing so became quite resourceful. 

In March 1998, Nancy would meet Tom, a young 8 year old boy that reminded her of her brother Mike. They would form a strong bond and together, would team up to survive the harsh realities of street life. Coming and going, the pair would often end up in a small chapel in the East District of Raccoon City. The priest would often take them in for a night of two, provide them would food. 

Unaware of the looming spread of the T-Virus, on 25 September 1998, Nancy receives a postcard from the priest. He explained that Tom’s mother, recently released from prison had written to him looking to find Tom. Tom’s mother, Kathleen was now in Kent City, just 30KM away from Raccoon. Nancy took the postcard and kept it on her person, but decided that she did not want to share the information with her new “brother” at this time. 

A few days later the T-virus had spread throughout Raccoon City, but Nancy had been astute enough to work out that the water supply had been contaminated and stocked up on cola. She wanted to escape the city and made her first attempt in the early hours of 28 September 1998. Heading alongside the river path, she avoided chasing Zombies but something caught her eye – smoke rising from a river – an upturned car. Investigating further, Nancy found a very injured young boy – Bobby in the undergrowth. He was close to death and in his last moments handed her a floppy disc that Bobby had acquired from Dr. Linda Pearl. Bobby tells Nancy to go to the press and expose Umbrella. He then dies.

Armed with this information and no doubt the closing Zombie hoard, Nancy takes the floppy disc back into Raccoon City to the Press Office. Fortunately the road and building was clear and she could access the data on file. The personal account and evidence of Jill Valentine and Umbrella’s B.O.Ws. 

Armed with this, Nancy returns to the makeshift base that her and her friends had set up in a basement in the East District of Raccoon City. Here she stays with Ken, another teenager as well as as “brother”, Tom. 

Sitting tight, two other teenagers knock at the door – George and Sally. The pair had been fleeing the carnage outside and knew of each other from their life of petty crime. Nancy takes the lead and armed with only one gun between the five, arranges for them to work together in order to escape the city. As they agree this, a mischief of rats burst from the ventilation system. They flee the relative safety of the basement and brave the streets looking for a car.

Tom spots an RPD patrol car with 2 seemingly dead officers inside. As the group approach, one officer whispers “water” and Nancy hands him a Cola. Ken is less and impressed with the waste of resources believing the cop to be close to death. They agree therefore to remove the cops and steal the car.

As the day ends and the 29 September begins, the officers are removed, but the commotion has attracted the attention of a murder of crows who take aim at the children. They hurry into the car and do up the windows. The car struggles to start, with one corvid even smashing a window, but George is able to get the car started and the crow removed. 

The joy of escaping however is short lived as George quickly realises that the brakes are not working. Heading towards a crash, he drives the car sideways along a building wall in an attempt to slow it down. It partially works and all of them are able to jump from the moving car before it crashes and explodes.

Catching their breath and worried about attracting more attention, the group hide in the shadows lamenting the city’s demise. Creeping further away from danger, they are again spotted by infected crows and Zombies. However, they have travelled far enough to make into a large unlocked house. They flee inside and close the doors to relative safety. The house would turn out to be empty but has food supplies by the dozen. A solid base for now.

George however knows things need to progress and they need weapons. Nancy explores the second floor with Ken and Tom. Here they find a large comfortable lounge. Tom opens the curtains to see a garden. A garden where a large beehive has developed. Nancy instantly summarises that there is a good chance that the bees are infected so urges caution. Ken dismisses this due to his fear and opens the window and fires rounds at the hive. This aggravates the hive and a swarm of bees flies towards the house. Nancy screams to shut the window, which they do, just in time.

The three rejoin Sally and George and share some food before the group take turns to sleep and rest.

By late afternoon on the same day, a refreshed group plan their next move. Tension has been building and Sally confronts Nancy. Sally is of the view that Nancy is trying to steal George from her – something she dismisses and petty jealously. 

Tom is left alone as the four head back into the streets to search of weapons. George goes solo in order to prevent the jealously from boiling over leaving Nancy with Sally and Ken. On the streets, Nancy notices a van and can see a Colt Python and ammunition scattered about the on the floor. However a Zombie feasts on a body nearby. The three agree a plan and Ken is to sneak up and grab the ammunition whilst Nancy prizes the gun. Sally to stay and watch.

The plan seems to be working well as Nancy and Ken reach the van without the Zombie noticing. Suddenly a bottle smashes and the Zombie notices Nancy. The two are separated and Ken is caught between a rock and a hard place. Nancy is defenceless but he makes the decision to leave Nancy.

Ken is devastated by this, but Sally is non-perplexed. Ken realises that Sally probably threw the bottle to attract the Zombie much to his disgust. George arrives in time to ask about Nancy just as she returns. George asks where she had been with Nancy dismissing it as merely falling behind the group. She has however grabbed the Colt and likewise, Ken had nabbed a shotgun and a fee handguns.

The four head back to the house to meet with Tom. Again, renewed optimism is short lived as the door had been left open. A lone bee flies in and stings Sally. Sally immediately begins to feel ill and the group care for her on the sofa for the following hours.

As evening falls, Sally’s symptoms worsen and by late night, she dies.

Now the 30 September, the group have to decide their next steps, worried that Sally is about to turn into a Zombie. They agree that Sally needs a proper burial and head to the nearby cemetery. George also brings kerosene.

Arriving at the graveyard, everyone helps to dig a home and place Sally into the ground. As they do, the ground trembles and recently buried Zombies rise from their own graves as the crows also return. Ken takes down the undead with the newly acquired shotgun, but the time has allowed Sally to fully turn. She begins twitching on the ground. Acting quickly, George covers her with kerosene and sets her alight.

The group head back to the house, but once again the door has been left open and now is infected with Zombies. Instead they head to the banks of the Marble River to find a bridge and escape.

After travelling for hours, Tom is exhausted. Arguments in the group emerge about who’s fault it was for Sally’s death. More hours pass and they reach a crossing point. Unfortunately, the bridge has actually collapsed but a small boat is identified at the pier.

Now close to midnight, the group see that the boat is a single person kayak, again denting escape hopes. Ken however takes action, pointing his gun at Nancy and George. He demands his own escape happily condemning the others to the burning city. A fight breaks out between the two men and in the scuffle, the shotgun is fired – straight into Nancy’s stomach.

Ken takes the opportunity to escape into the kayak but is promptly eaten by a Neptune shark. George and Tom take Nancy to the chapel nearby – the same one that Nancy and Tom had used so frequently in the past. By now it is in the small hours of 1 October and Tom is hopeful that the priest is alive. He ventures to his private room to locate medicine, but is only met with more bees. He slams the door shut. 

Meanwhile Nancy knows she is on the way out. She reveals the postcard from Tom’s mother Kathleen and tells George that he must help Tom escape so he can be with his mother in Kent City. George agrees as Nancy slowly passes away from the gun wound.

George would then set the church on fire to ensure Nancy’s body was not eaten by the undead.
