Nick
Nick (surname unknown) was and Umbrella employee and resident during the Raccoon City Incident of September 1998. He was killed eventually by his own zombified wife Anita and a house fire.
Nick’s early life is a mystery but at some point he met and married a young women called Anita. She was born and raised in Raccoon City but the couple spent their early years together in Detroit Michigan. The couple would in 1981 have their first and only child – a girl they called Jane.
Nick was a skilled mechanic and worked at a large local garage which was part of a much larger corporation who’s main motivation was money and growth. Being somewhat higher in the company than others, Nick would later admit that he too was caught up in that world and ran an efficient and money driven operation at the garage. At an unspecified date after Anita’s birth, Nick notice that some of the electrical equipment was faulty and it would be on him as to why that fault occurred in the first place. He feared being fired over such a failure and therefore decided not to report it to his bosses.
A few days later the same electrical equipment would short circuit which sparked and triggered a major fire in the garage. Flames quickly took hold of the building and Nick fled the stricken building. As he looked on, he could hear his colleagues screaming out for help – screaming for his name. Panicked and in shock, Nick froze and instead witnessed the fire engulf the building.
The incident was promptly covered up by hiss employer as a tragic accident where many lives were lost. In his guilt, Nick confessed that the fire was likely caused by the faulty equipment. He was promptly fired, but fortunatly for him, not reported to authorities. Following the incident Nick and Anita decided they should move from Detroit and decided to move to Raccoon City where they could raise their daughter.
Over the years, the guilt never left Nick. He quickly found employment in Raccoon City, working for the town’s big employer Umbrella as a courier which sustained a decent income for him and his family. However, Nick also found comfort with alcohol and would regularly consume far too much. Jane and Anita would see this often and they would spend more time together as a result. Sadly Nick’s drunken ramblings would become a thing of local knowledge.
On 17 August 1998 Nick was recovering from another heavy drinking session when Jane and Anita decided to head out to the Arklay Mountains for a hike. They were also planning on picking up some green herbs known to help cure hangovers. The trip proved to be fatal however as the pair were caught when then weather suddenly turned on them and a thunderstorm rolled in. They attempted to run back to their car, but had become disorientated and ended up in the ruins of the Spencer Mansion.
After the storm passed the pair decided to leave but as they did, they are attacked by a pack of Cerberus. They flee and attempt to make it back to the car. Anita however falls and is attacked by the hounds. Jane however is successful and makes it back, but faces the reality of losing her mother and Nick his wife.
In the early hours of 19 September 1998 Nick is recovering again from alcohol when Jane and her boyfriend Jim awaken him on the sofa. They tell Nick about their visit to the ruins of the Spencer Mansion and the possibility they saw Anita! Nick is furious at such a stupid notion and gestures for Jim to go home.
Later that afternoon Nick heads into town to the bar to drown his sorrows th whiskey. He recounts the story to the barkeeper who notes that Nick has probably had too much to drink. As it happens, Nick’s Manager is also at the bar that night who warns Nick that he, like most people are on Umbrella’s payroll. Spreading rumours about monsters and that mansion is not a good idea.
Nick staggers home later that evening and slumps on the sofa falling asleep. Suddenly Jim arrives at the home again in his car warning of an incident. Jane, Jim and Nick venture over to Norman’s house to find that Samson, Norman’s dog has been decapitated and that Norman himself is missing. The three enter Norman’s home. Jane stays on the ground floor whilst Jim and Nick explore upstairs. The two men head cautiously with a flashlight and shotgun. They find a broken window and hear a drip, drip sound. They peer upwards and see a Giant Spider feasting on a body. The creature, startled drops the body which turns out to be Norman – his eyes gouged out. Nick fires his shotgun at the spider just as Jane screams from downstairs. Nick and Jim run from upstairs to find Jane petrified of the sight of another Giant Spider outside. The three evacuate and call the police.
Half an hour later the RPD attend the scene and Nick attempts to explain what he has seen. The officers dismiss his claims and that Norman has been spotted near the sawmill. Nick then leaves the scene to investigate leaving Jane at home.
Nick travels to sawmill and calls out to Norman. No response, but it is not long before he finds him – dilapidated and zombified. Nick runs, but is pursued by Norman and other Zombies. In fact he quickly becomes surrounded just outside the mill and has to jump into the cold river to escape and make it back to his car.
The next morning on 20 September 1998, Nick returns and tells Jane his adventure the previous night regarding a now zombified Norman. Just then they hear a gnawing upstairs. They investigate the bathroom where a swarm of rats emerge. Jane flees the scene with her Dad just as Jim arrives in his car. Jim is feeling unwell and explains that he was on his way to meet his father who has not returned his calls. Jim falls out of the car so Jane and Nick help him to their sofa to rest. Jane decides to nurse Jim with medicine and then ointment when Jim complains of itchy skin. Nick meanwhile decides to leave and find Jim’s father, Mark at his work – the Arklay Dam.
Nick travels as fast as he can, but is shocked to see what looks to be a large black mass on the road, near Victory Lake. It was not a mass however, but a swarm of rats all headed in the same direction. Ploughing on, Nick arrives at the Dam to find it empty but the TV is still on. Switching it off and Nick hears the unmistakable sound of pulled feet. He follows the sound downstairs and spies a Zombie. He cries out in horror and flees to a nearby office for safety. In the office an injured Mark laments his luck. He tells Nick that the rats not only overran the dam, but they infected the water supply with the virus they were carrying. A colleague drank tea and immediately turned into a Zombie. Mark tells Nick he has to warn the city because it is too late for him, revealing a wounded arm. He says that he was bitten and now has a fever and is itchy all over. He demands Nick kills him as a human, but when Nick refused, Mark gets up and jumps out of the window and over the dam to his death.
Nick then leaves and returns home worried about Jane and Jim. He instantly tells Jane to help him move Jim to the basement – Jim is infected and will turn into a Zombie. Jane is horrified by this news but helps her father and they lock Jim in the basement. Nick then leaves Jane once again telling her not to drink the water as heads downtown to tell his friends the same.
In downtown Raccoon City, Nick attempts to tell his friends not to drink the water, but none will listen to him believing him to be drunk. Nick heads home to a worried Jane for good reason. At least 10 Zombies are now in their suburb and headed towards their home.
In the early hours of the 21 September 1998 the siege begins. Jane and Nick barricade their front door, but the undead are relentless, breaking windows. The hear a knock in the basement and Jane rushes downstairs. She unlocks the door, but Nick slams it shut. Jim, still alive is worried and demands that Nick kills him as a human. Instead, Nick slides Jim a revolver and Jim ends his life. Jane is traumatised by this but the panic does not end their. The two rush upstairs and then upstairs again into a bedroom. Jane begins to search for furniture to assist in the new barricade as Nick takes guard.
During this time a zombified Anita approaches and takes a bite out of Nick. He pushes his dead wife away allowing Jane to slip into the room with a chair and prevent a full on assault. Nick however, is not in a good state and begins to feel the effects of the T-Virus almost straight away. He tells Jane that his time is at an end but wants to ensure Jane makes it. He tells Jane to burn the house down using gasoline and that he will go out in a blaze of glory giving enough time for Jane to make it out.
With the fire ablaze, Nick knocks down the door and begins firing his shotgun, the commotion leaves enough time for Jane to make it to the staircase as the fire quickly takes a hold. However, through her father’s heroic actions, Jane is able to escape the home before it collapses. She flees outside where onlookers are watching aghast as they wait for the RFD to arrive.
As the fire takes hold, Jane looks back and hear her father scream “ANITA”. Jane wants to go back in but is held back as her home is destroyed by the flames.
