Orthrus

The Orthrus were originally trial subjects for early strains of the t-Phobos Virus. The base organism is a wild dog or boar native to Sushestvovanie Island and these creatures were captured and subjected to the same abuse and torture experiments as the Afflicted. Metal implements were hammered into their bodies and then left there to add an extra attacking method to a creature that favoured ramming its prey. The virus caused severe degeneration to the ocular nerves and the creatures were blind, meaning they used other sensory perceptions to sniff out their targets. Like a wild boar, the Orthrus possessed an elongated snout with the skin decaying to the point where the white of the bone was practically visible. Interestingly as part of the experiment, the head was surgically detached in places, allowing researchers to manipulate their spinal cords and measure the resulting response to extreme stress. Likewise a pair of artificial metal teeth was inserted inside the animal’s jaw, similar to a spring- activated bear trap. When an Orthrus pinned down its prey, its partially detached head would lift up completely, revealing these metal teeth where usually its throat would be.

A secondary effect of the virus also included the shedding of fur from the creature, leaving nothing but bloated skin and muscle beneath. Orthrus were pack animals and scavengers, retaining enough intelligence to lay down instinctive, co-ordinated attacks. They also possessed the ability to ‘play-dead’ and confuse their prey. They were prone to guttural growling and they would give away their positions easily by charging across the ground. The creature’s name is a derivative of Orthoros; the two-headed dog from Greek mythology and brother to Cerberus. They were developed primarily as opponents for the human subjects chosen for the fear experiment trials taking place on the island.
