Resident Evil (Vol.2) (2009 – 2011 – DC Comics)
Resident Evil (Vol.2) was a series of comics written by Ricardo Sanchez between 2009 and 2011.
In total, 6 comics were released and then later collected in the trade paperback. The individual comics were originally released under Wildstorm with issue 1 being released in May 2009, issue 2 in June 2009, issue 3 in January 2010, issue 4 May 2010, issue 5 July 2010 and finally issue 6 in February 2011. The trade paperback was released on 30 August 2011 by DC Comics under licence from Wildstorm.
Resident Evil was marketed as a prequel to Resident Evil 5 as it heavily featured members of the B.S.A.A organisation. However, despite this the comic series itself very much acted as a stand-alone action adventure mission with very little overlap between it and Resident Evil 5.
The comic series is widely considered to be a non-canonical adventure and indeed this is reiterated in the book itself with the following declaration:
“This comic is based upon an original story by Wildstorm and is not part of the officially recognised Resident Evil canon as created and established by Capcom.”

General Plot:
<2009>
On the Joint Nations Space Research Station no-one can hear you scream. 5 days after radio silence from the research station, B.S.A.A agent Mina Gere is tasked with finding out what has happened to the researchers on board who had been assigned to investigate the effects of and monitor some of Umbrella’s virus’ in space.
Upon arrival, Gere would find that the station had been overrun with the T-Virus after an experiment called Hydra had seemingly come free and infected the crew. Licker B.O.Ws had also been released and all of the crew were either Zombies or just dead.
Mina battles through the floating undead, restoring power but uncovering some of the experiments that had taken place including exposing both the T and G-Virus’ to cosmic radiation. It also transpired that a second payload/shuttle had taken off from the space station the day of the outbreak loaded with the G-Virus.
Mina manages to detonate the research station ensuring the virus would not spread and was successfully picked up by her team in space.
Meanwhile in Grzbekistan, the lone payload satellite had crashed loaded with the G-Virus causing a small scale outbreak. B.S.A.A agent, Holiday Sugarman was on the scene and able to defeat the G-Zombies and the G-Prime creation. Holiday also discovered that the payload was manufactured by Giesel Industries.
Back at HQ, reports had filtered through about the use of biological weapons between waring countries, Übelandia and Urador. Agent Gere had been dispatched to investigate further, but it quickly became apparant that a more experienced hand would be requried and Holiday was called in to assist. Coupled with the fact that Giesel Industries founder and CEO, Fritz Giesel had his main compound in Übelandia, it was an ideal opportunity to investigate and determine if Giesel was complicit with biological weapons.
After fighting off local Zombies, Holiday and Gere led a team to the Giesel Compound where they were met not by CEO, Fritz Giesel, but his nephew Neuermann Giesel. Neuermann explained that his uncle had not been seen for years and he was now in charge. Giesel led the B.S.A.A into his compound, specifcally his large greenhouse that housed a gian orchid. This plant however was not as it seemed and the entire thing was a ruse to lure the B.S.A.A to their doom.
The orchid was sentient and a T-Virus creation. Giesel fled whilst Eliminator and Hunter B.O.Ws also swarmed the room. The B.S.A.A fought valiantly but not before encountering and ultimately defeating Giesel’s own Tyrant.
With Giesel fleeing the compound, Mira hacked into the computer system discovering a nearby B.O.W facility within the Urador. It becomes apparent that Giesel was providing weapons to both sides of the war for his own profit. The B.S.A.A were able to track Giesel to the B.O.W facility which itself was crawling with the undead and dog-based monsters.
During Mina’s investigations she discovered some of the additional research Giesel was conducting including T-Virus based gene therapy. Neuermann was in fact Fritz’s clone created using the T-Virus!
Mina also discovers that most of the B.O.W’s have a safety killswitch lodged into their brains in case they ever go rogue.
Landing in the facility, Holiday quickly encounters Giesel who had set off a self destruct sequence. Battling hand to hand, Holiday is able to fire some bullets at the mad-man but due to his T-Virus creation, he is able to regenerate his wounds quickly. It is only when Holiday unleashes an experimental infrasonic weapon directly on Fritz does he get the upperhand. The weapon fries his insides causing him to die instantly.
Meanwhile Gere is attempting to prevent the self destruct by removing the kill switch, however this proves impossible and most of the lab explodes causing Gere to suffer concussion.
Looking to make their escape, the pair are stopped by Giesel as he mutates into a Tyrant like creature. Holiday is able to overcome the creature with a well placed knife, slicing off his head.
The next day, whilst recovering in hospital, the pair learn that the real Fritz Giesel is alive and has promised to donate to Übelandia to help the country rebuild.
COMMENTARY
An interesting comic and story generally and certainly worth a read. Back in 2011 this seemed a more outlandish Resident Evil tale, but with future canonical tales becoming more and more fantastical, the only real contentious issue with this story is the lesser powered but hive mind creating G-Virus – and even that is more of a set up of Giesel Industries. It has no real impact on the main plot itself.
Like other canonical stories, specifically the Heavenly Island manga, there is an element of over the top-ness to this story, specifically the fact that we have Zombies and Lickers in space. If you can get past that, and indeed even in the real world, having dangerous virus’ be experiemented on in the vacuum of space is not a bad idea at all. Quite how the G-Virus does not spread as one would think it might and how a hive mind is created can be attirbuted entirely to the G-Virus + cosmic radiation differences.
The main plot is much more familair to Biohazard fans. Big T-Virus monsters, cloned baddies, terrorism, the B.S.A.A. It’s all here and serves a very enjoyable if not completely self contained storyline that has no impact on the main game series.
So, whilst it is clearly a non-canonical title, there is little to prevent it from being added to someone’s headcanon. There is no signficant contradictions to what we know already and actively adds to the B.S.A.A’s ranks well.
