Snake (Makoba)

The Makoba Snake was a native species of venomous snake found in the Arklay Forest surrounding Raccoon City. At some point it became infected with the T-Virus, possibly being exposed to the virus through another animal.

However, the snake has a somewhat unique reaction to the virus and was able to an extent, co-exist with it through its own adaptation. Over time it and developed a new strain of T-Virus (unofficially dubbed the T-Makoba Virus) within its own bloodstream therefore making this serpent the progenitor of the small outbreak that would occur in the Makoba Village in 1998.

In a series of very unfortunate events, a local devil ritual that originated from Makoba Village caused the outbreak. The ritual itself was fairly rudimental and involved worshippers to collect the locally grown Green Herbs and the capture of what they called a poisonous snake. On 22 June 1998 the hunt for the snake was taking place, led by Reverend Simmons and a chap called Wilson. This formed the nexus of the Festival of St. Havojeh, so there was delight when the Makoba Snake was captured.

The next stage involved the drawing of the snake’s blood and drank by the worshippers. However, as the snake was infected with the t-Virus this caused all that drank it to also become infected.

Clearly, there was no material difference between the infected snake and non-infected snake and indeed, infected humans would also see a slow infection rate before the more common zombie symptoms were displayed.

In this case however, upon consuming the blood, Wilson detected that someone was not quite right and instead of either killing or releasing the snake, he kept it and took it back to the village.

Over the next month, the outbreak would gradually spread amongst the villagers as confusion and fear multiplied. Victims would go in and out of zombification with the village chief reluctant to outright kill anybody.

The effects on Wilson and Reverend Simmons was delirum and madness. Simmons also gained strength attributing his power to the devil.

On 20 July 1998 the outbreak is in full swing and Jill Valentine is holed up in the village church. Wilson by now is dreaming of world domination and power and looks to flee the village. However, he has dropped the ball when it has come to the Makoba Snake. Over the past month, the more common effect of the T-Virus on snakes generally has occurred and the creature has rapidly grown in size. As Wilson flees the church the snake attacks Wilson and devours him completely.

Little is known of the snake’s existence thereafter, however it can be theorised that the same creature continued to prowl the Arklay Forest. On 23 July 1998, a large snake caused significant damage to Billy Rabbitson’s ski lodge cabin. Both Jill, Chris and Billy encountered the large serpant and were able to fire magnum rounds into the creature. It can be presumed to have been destroyed following this encounter or when the village was blocked by the military after the incident.
