T-Makoba Virus

The T-Makoba Virus (unofficial name) was a variant of the T-Virus that naturally occurred in the bloodstream of a snake secondary infectant B.O.W. The snake itself had been infected from the T-Virus outbreak that was slowly leaking out from the Arklay Forest in early 1998.

With most secondary infectants the T-Virus would overrun their internal makeup and could be spread should that creatures bodily fluid enter into the body of an uninfected person. This is seen many times in the early outbreak in the Arklay Forest, mainly through escaped Cerberus leading to zombies and other creatures.

At some point a snake became infected with the T-Virus but showed a natural resistance to the infection, at least in the early stages. The creature was able to counter the usual effects and in doing so, weaken the virus considerably. This created a unique template, but ironically was one that Umbrella had been doing with many creatures at the Arklay Facility since 1978 after its discovery.

On 22nd June 1998 the snake was captured in the Arklay Mountains and some of its blood was drained and consumed by residents of Makoba Village. In doing some of these humans became infected with this new strain of T-Virus. Whilst this Makoba strain has similar properties to other early T-Virus strains – ultimately humans do become zombies, there are some notable differences.

Firstly when assessing the snake, this did grow in size becoming far larger than the base organism, but did not grow to the size of the Yawn B.O.W. One month post infection, the snake would grow and develop a taste for humans…

Secondly with humans, like the V-ACT strain, infection and the effects can take a long time before someone fully degenerates into a zombie. However, with this strain you may not even get infected at all with a bite. It can be so weak that aside from the physical pain of being bitten, there is no lasting damage. It can be speculated that, just like the base snake, if you have a natural resilience to it, you will not remain infected and your body will naturally cure you. Jill Valentine is one such person who was bitten twice but never infected.

This is not true for everyone and if you are unable to defend yourself naturally, then the signs of zombification will begin within the typical month period. However, unlike the VACT strain where infection once rooted is fatal, the Makoba strain, with its lesser potency will not always be the same death sentence.

Humans here are known to go in and out of zombification. During such times, the primal urge to feed is activated and skin necrosis and the other symptoms occur. However, your body will continue to fight the virus and in doing so, infectants will appear to get better and return to a somewhat human state. The cycle will repeat with smaller periods of humanity each time before eventually the virus takes over.

It can be speculated that again if you have this natural resilience towards the virus, you can co-exist to an extent, or even never be infected at all. Another such human was Harvey Simmons who directly consumed the blood of the snake. Whilst he began to suffer from mental delusions of grandur, he very much retained his humanity. This lasted a good month, before just before his death, he began to mutate.
